frame pacing issue / missing frames in (screen - game) recordings

Hi,I have had a persistent issue since building my PC: my recordings ( mostly minecraft) never look visually smooth, even with 60 FPS and no lag.

Current PC specs:
CPU: Intel Core Ultra 9 285K
GPU: ASUS TUF RTX 5080
RAM: 32 GB DDR5
Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming Pro z890 wifi
PSU: 850W dark power 13 be quite
Monitors: 1x 4K monitor + 1x 1440p monitor (LG ultraGear both)
Storage: 4 TB Gen4 NVMe

At first, I thought it was a setting issue: bitrate, encoder, OBS settings, Minecraft settings, etc.I went on a crazy journey of testing and trying things out, it's been going on for a year so...

I already tested:
EVERY recording software settings,
EVERY windows settings,
EVERY Software setting,
multiple clean Windows installs;
Linux test;3 different CPU;
3 different motherboard;
different RAM;4 different GPU;
different monitor;different cable;
iGPU test;Disassembling and rebuilding my PC from scratch
Tried a different wall outlet

what i haven't tried yet is changing my SSD, PSU, checking every cables or swapping them and try, I already tested multiple combinations and more...

i found recently after very precise test, that the actually "general quality issue" is a random frame pacing capture, After analyzing recordings frame by frame from up close, I noticed that the frames are not being captured at a consistent pace. up to 50% difference timing pace between them, creating this "juddering / jittering" feel, the oposite of smooth, AND TO THIS, i have skipped frames (about 3 to 10) a second, with no game lag, no software lag,but random, sometimes i have no skipped frames for 4 secondes, and then sundenly i get 20 skips in a full second, never 2 frames skipped back to back, always 1, i also tried 60hz / 60 game fps / 60fps OBS capture, no difference, same problem,

started to feel like i'm crazy and running after a ghost but when i make my friends do this test, and on my old 2017 iMac i can tell the preview looks SMOOTH AND EVEN, and so the recording (with me the preview looks already bad before hitting record) so i know i'm not crazy :')

OBS does not report dropped/skipped frames or encoding/rendering lag. my computer is strong enough for that.

if anyone has like an idea, NOT related to settings, software, drivers, (unless something i really did not think of, but i've been on it for over a year, trust me, i've done it all, PLEASE tell me lol, i'm desperate,

what i'm thinking of is testing a Gen5 SSD, mine is 4, trying to review every cables of the motherboard one by one, i'm thinking the problem would be at this point in a PSU, or a invisible cable problem or something, i have no issue on the computer that would give away any clue to understand wich makes the case even more confusing,

i'm joining a link to a quick 4k60 i did on minecraft for those who would like to have a quick visual of it : https://youtu.be/RGfh5DnJv44

thank you for taking the time to read this, if you have any idea please hit me up :') have a good day

A OBS log with an encoding session is needed.

How many drives do you have in that mobo? Did you purchase & install the Hyper Card? I'm looking at the Users Manual, did you follow this? Too many drives & your GPU is operating @ x8 instead of x16.

I only have 1 NVMe SSD installed.i'm in x16 gen 5 it's all good there, it's already a test i've done where i didn't find any anomalies

Good! Looks like up to (3) with no bifurcation. 4 or more & the GPU gets nerfed.

Did the Gen 5 drive help?

From my experience the answer is no, changing parts most likely is not going to fix the issue.

no it did not help,
well... since i know it's not driver related, settings, bios or software side..... the only thing i know is that it must be a hardware related problem, thanks for your answer but no the gen 5 drive did not help i already knew that but thanks anyway,

if you have like any other idea where to look at i'd be happy to hear it tho,

You didn't specify the version your playing but It could be the source. Bad sources will cause stuttering & other issues. Try capturing something else...

Uh oh....you have a LG Ultragear Monitor? rockbottom is right, post your OBS log. Post the model of both LG Ultragear monitors. I'll bet that it's a FreeSync/GSync monitor. If so, then your monitor does not have a module, like mine. When it comes to OBS, we need to troubleshoot EDID information. I wished that it could be captured in the OBS log.

You have a RTX 5080, so you are good. OBS is not the problem, your EDID is. You need to get the Custom Resolution Utility and at the top, edit your Vertical range. It might be set to use VESA MediaSync because most of those start from 48hz to 144hz or whatever. Set it to use ActiveSync by changing the minimum vertical range from 48 to 60hz. Don't change the horizontal range or total number of pixels.

Windows does not know how to validate EDID's in our monitors, so when the video driver is loaded, it will create a Monitor (in the Device Manager) and set those to use VESA's MediaSync standards. MediaSync is for jitter-free playback from web broswers and videos, but not necessarily gaming.

Good info regarding those LG monitors/G & Free Sync.

FWIW, I don't recommend either G-Sync or Free-Sync when using OBS. Fixed Refresh Rates /Fixed Monitor Tech is all I use.

Yeah, I set it to Fixed in its profile. I think it's also in the OBS guides from the main page. I said VRR range because VRR uses it, but it's really the vertical range, the horizonal range (in kHz) and the total pixels. I also corrected my statement to reflect what I meant.

Hi, thank you for your answers.

I’m providing two OBS logs:

First log: this one looks broken, with capture errors.
Second log: I completely cleaned/reinstalled OBS, created a fresh scene with only one Game Capture source, and recorded again. The log looks much cleaner, but the visual quality/frame pacing problem was still there.

About the EDID/VRR suggestion: I tested it with CRU.

My LG monitor was showing a FreeSync range of 60–144 Hz. I changed the range as suggested, then also tested with the FreeSync/VRR range removed completely. Windows then showed Variable Refresh Rate: Not Supported. I also set NVIDIA Control Panel to Fixed Refresh and disabled G-Sync/FreeSync.

Result: it slightly changes the behavior sometimes, but it does not fix the issue. I still get irregular motion / duplicated-looking frames / bad pacing.

Also, this issue is not limited to Minecraft or OBS Game Capture. I can reproduce it with:

  • different games
  • Game Capture
  • Display Capture
  • recording a YouTube video / desktop motion
  • OBS, ShadowPlay, Streamlabs, and other recording software
The important detail is that the problem is already visible in the OBS preview before encoding. The final file can be constant 60 FPS, but the captured motion is not evenly paced.
